Green Electricity

Environmental protection materials, recycling and recycling are the most common and easily practiced sustainable development mode in the past, but it is far from enough for fashion enterprises. Facing the huge pollution caused by traditional power generation behind the huge industrial chain, more and more root problems need to be solved. Therefore, the use of green power is becoming the only way for fashion enterprises.

According to a joint assessment by quantis, a sustainable development consultancy, and the climate works foundation, carbon emissions from the fashion industry account for more than 8% of global emissions. In addition, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), greenhouse gas emissions from energy production and use account for about two-thirds of the total emissions, of which carbon dioxide emissions from electricity production and related industries account for about 65% of the total carbon dioxide emissions of the energy industry.

As early as 2015, the "Paris Agreement" adopted by the climate change conference proposed that the energy related carbon dioxide emissions should be reduced by at least 70% compared with the 2015 level by 2050, and renewable energy including wind energy, solar energy and water energy should be applied on a large scale.

At the same time, a new energy outlook report published by Bloomberg also pointed out that by 2050, the global renewable electricity will grow explosively to 62% of the total power generation, of which photovoltaic power and wind power account for 48%. With the gradual development of green power market and the improvement of renewable energy electricity purchase mechanism. After a series of circular economy models based on the development of environmental protection materials, waste recycling, and second-hand trading, more and more fashion enterprises begin to meet their green consumption needs through green electricity and green certificate trading.

New members of the green power echelon

In the second half of this year, re100, convened by the climate organization and jointly promoted with the non-profit organization CDP (carbon Information Disclosure Project), aims to promote the use of 100% renewable energy power by the most influential enterprises in the world, and Enel green power (EGP), which was established in December 2008, is committed to developing renewable energy worldwide, There are more new members from the fashion industry.

Lululemon and EGP   Signing of virtual power purchase agreement

In August, lululemon and Enel green power signed the first virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), further promoting the brand's goal of purchasing 100% renewable energy. With the signing of the agreement, lululemon's 360 stores, six offices and five distribution centers in the United States will be able to use renewable electricity to further reduce its carbon footprint.

"This will be an important milestone in our development of green energy and a healthy earth," Esther speck, vice president of lululemon's sustainability business, told the agreement Brewery Anheuser Busch and other companies maintain a long-term partnership.

At the end of July this year, ynap, a luxury e-commerce company, publicly announced that it had achieved the goal of using 100% renewable energy in its operating facilities by the end of 2020, and at the same time, it had fulfilled its commitment when joining re100. At present, ynap uses a combination of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, hydropower and bioenergy to supply power to 17 operating facilities in seven global markets, such as warehouses and offices, with a total power supply area of over 270000 square meters. It is worth mentioning that ynap is the first luxury e-commerce to join re100.

On September 22, este é Lauder became one of the four winners of the re100 Leadership Award. Nancy Mahon, senior vice president of global citizenship and sustainable development of EST é e Lauder, said: "we have achieved an important milestone in our climate strategy, thanks to our innovative portfolio - committed to working with business, non-profit organizations and the public sector to address the climate crisis and achieve 100% use of renewable electricity."

In addition, at the beginning of October this year, authorized by the Cartier group and in cooperation with the international jewelry responsibility Committee (RJC), the clock and jewelry 2030 initiative jointly released by Kadeya group and the international jewelry responsibility Committee (RJC) also mentioned initiatives such as building climate resilience, protecting natural resources and promoting inclusiveness, It is also pointed out that 100% renewable energy will be used in all operating departments of enterprises by 2025, and suppliers and distribution partners will be involved in 2030.

Both re100, a renewable energy initiative organization, and Enel green power, a green power mining company, have found more strategic solutions to the source problem of energy conservation and emission reduction in the fashion industry through their respective appeal and mining and R & D technologies, and more and more brand enterprises have joined in to put green power into use, It is the only way to develop into a fashion industry.

Green power becomes the only way for fashion industry

For a long time in the past, re100 has brought together more than 300 most influential enterprises in various fields in the world to jointly promote the further development of sustainable energy. In addition to the first luxury e-commerce ynap mentioned above, it also includes luxury group Kaiyun, Lifen group, PVH group, VF group, cosmetics giants Coty, P & G, and luxury goods Chanel and Burberry, To Nike, ASICs and many other brands.

Among them, Chanel, as a member of re100 alliance, released an official document named "Chanel mission 1.5" in March 2020, aiming to control the rise of global average temperature within 1.5 ℃ through its own strength. Among the four commitments for the next 10 years, one is the commitment to use 100% renewable power globally by 2025. Burberry announced that by 2022, the brand will be able to use renewable energy for all its businesses. Nike and ASICs have announced that 100% renewable energy will be used by 2025 and 2050, respectively.

Enel green power, which has signed power purchase agreements with fashion companies such as lululemon and gap, currently manages more than 1200 power plants on five continents, owns operating or under construction assets in 21 countries, and carries out development activities in 6 other countries. According to a statistics as of June 30, 2021, Enel green power has produced a total of 49.88 GW of installed power plant capacity using wind, hydro, solar, geothermal and biomass energy.

In addition, Enel green power, after building Lily solar energy + energy storage project in July and October last year, and azure sky solar energy + energy storage project in Texas, announced in March this year the construction of a project for CO location deployment of wind power generation facilities and energy storage systems in Texas. At the same time, the company said that after the opening of the azure sky wind energy + energy storage project, it will generate 1300gwh of electricity per year through its 79 wind turbines. The battery energy storage system will store part of the power and provide power services for the grid. In July this year, energy green power North America also acquired 3.2gw solar and solar energy storage project portfolio from Dakota renewable energy (a joint venture between Dakota power partners and eolian), and plans to put it into commercial operation in 2023.

Enel green power, renewable power developer

In September this year, China's national development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration officially approved the "green power trading pilot work plan", and China ushered in a strong wind of becoming the world's largest enterprise green power trading market. On September 24, China Federation of logistics and purchasing, together with 14 logistics enterprises in various fields, including COSCO Shipping Logistics, Jingdong Logistics and Suning logistics, launched an initiative to actively respond to participate in green electricity trading and increase green power consumption in warehousing, sorting and distribution.

With more and more industries from fashion to technology put into use green power, such as sustainable energy developers such as Enel green power, and the continuous expansion of advocacy organizations such as re100, green power is clearly becoming a new wind outlet, and further promoting the double benefits of economic and sustainable development.

At the same time, this renewable energy with both power attributes and environmental protection attributes will inevitably be further expanded in a wider range of global industries.
