Africa Mali Cotton Production Drops Sharply
Malian Prime Minister moctar ouane said on Thursday that Mali's seed cotton production in 2020 / 21 fell by nearly 79% year-on-year to 147200 tons, partly due to the drop in prices caused by the new crown pneumonia, resulting in a decrease in sowing.
After the outbreak of the new crown epidemic in April last year, cotton prices fell to the lowest level since 2009. The price of seed cotton dropped sharply.
In addition, the elimination of some agricultural subsidies is also the reason for the decline in Mali's cotton production.
Mali is one of the four largest cotton producers in Africa. Together with Chad, Beninese and Burkinabe, Mali's seed cotton production was initially expected to be 820000 tons this year, compared with 700000 tons last year.
