Yue Embroidery

Yue Embroidery is the general name of Guangzhou Embroidery (Guangzhou Embroidery) and Chaozhou Embroidery (Chaozhou Embroidery). Yue Embroidery is a representative embroidery in Guangdong, one of the four famous embroideries, and one of the national intangible cultural heritage. Yuexiu embroidery is a magnificent "treasure in the south of the Five Ridges" with full composition and resplendence.

01 "Guangdong Embroidery"

Yue Embroidery originated in the Tang Dynasty and has a history of more than 1000 years. It, together with Su Embroidery, Xiang Embroidery and Shu Embroidery, is called the four famous embroideries in China.

During the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, Yue embroidery was exported from European merchant ships to foreign countries and became the favorite clothing of the court, the royal family and the nobility. In the 28th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1600), Queen Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom established the British Embroidery Association. Charles I of the United Kingdom succeeded to the British Isles and advocated the spread of Cantonese embroidery. Therefore, Cantonese embroidery is also known by Western scholars as "China's gift to the West".

Guangdong embroidery includes two schools of "Chaoxiu" and "Guangxiu".

"Chaoxiu" is mostly seen in costumes, and is famous for its full layout, luxuriant patterns, warm scenes, rich colors, strong contrast, and bright red and green.

"Guang Embroidery" is handmade embroidery produced in Guangfu area. Guangzhou Embroidery is a rare fine art because of its varied stitches, its emphasis on the harmonious use of light and shadow, and its emphasis on "work" for "art".

Yue embroidery is characterized by its bright colors, rich and compact layout, the use of gold thread as the contour line of embroidery patterns, and the abundance of stitches. The work is amazing from a distance and fine from a close look.

Guangdong embroidery techniques focus on combining the shape and quality of materials, including silk flannelette embroidery, gold and silver thread embroidery, thread embroidery and bead embroidery.

Among them, silk velvet embroidery is the most famous. With silk as the embroidery material, silk velvet embroidery has strong expressive force and is the oldest and most complete Guangdong embroidery variety.

The stitch of gold and silver thread embroidery is unique, and there are more than 60 kinds of seven categories of flat embroidery, knitting embroidery, winding embroidery, convex embroidery, cushion embroidery, applique embroidery, weaving embroidery, brocade, etc.

The themes of Yue embroidery are very wide. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, traditional themes such as peonies, birds paying homage to the phoenix, peacocks, etc. were the main themes; In the period of the Republic of China, celebrities, calligraphy and painting were the main ones.

While inheriting traditional themes and embroidery techniques, Guangdong embroidery increasingly reflects unique regional customs and customs. Patterns with strong Lingnan characteristics, such as lychees, kapok, flowers and birds, have also become the main themes of Guangdong embroidery, expressing people's love for life.
