Pakistan Was Forced To Import About 3000000 Bales Of Raw Cotton.
Pakistan
It will be forced to import about 3000000 bales of raw cotton to meet the needs of the local textile industry, as in the 2010-11 cotton season.
Cotton yield
About 11 million 500 thousand packs, and the target is 14 million packs.
Officials from the Ministry of food and agriculture of Pakistan say that in the current cotton season, Pakistan is expected to achieve the target set for cotton production, which is due to favorable conditions, but the flood has destroyed about 600000 hectares of cotton crops.
Before the recent floods, Pakistan expected to produce about 14000000 bales of cotton and 12 million 800 thousand cotton last year.
Officials say Pakistan's textile industry needs about 14 million bales of cotton a year.
It is estimated that the recent floods have lost 120 billion rupees of crops in Punjab and Sindh, among which
Cotton crop
More than 30% of the losses, so the local cotton industry will be forced to import about 3000000 bales of cotton, which will cost Pakistan about 120000000000 rupees (US $1 billion 395 million).
Officials said that about 3 million 400 thousand hectares of cotton were sown in Pakistan, of which about 600000 hectares were destroyed by floods and about 2500000 bales of cotton were lost.
Officials warn that Pakistan will face a severe shortage of cotton.
Pakistan's cotton production increased from 1 million 100 thousand packages in the 1947-48 cotton season to 14 million 265 thousand packs in the 2004-05 fiscal year, and the number of textile factories rose from 2 in the 1947-48 fiscal year to 460 in the 2009-10 fiscal year.
But unfortunately, in the past 10 years, cotton production has stagnated at an average of 12 million 500 thousand packages (except the 2004-05 cotton season, when Pakistan's cotton output reached 14 million 600 thousand packs).
The official said that in order to increase cotton production, farmers in Pakistan need to adopt modern agronomic techniques, pest management systems and proper use of pesticides. The government should formulate / adopt policies that are beneficial to farmers.
